At approximately 2km from Mokpo city, Gohado Island is known as the dragon of Mokpo’s seas because it seems to be surrounded by the southern coast of Mokpo. Gohado, which translates to “high altitude," was named as such because it sits beneath the impressive Yudalsan, or the “high mountain." Gohado can be accessed by ferry, the famous Mokpo Marine Cable Car, or by driving along the Mokpo Bridge.
It is said that people lived on Gohado since the Three Kingdoms Period of Korea (57 BC to 668 AD). Gohado was designated as a Historic Site (Local Monument No.10) in honor of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, who used Gohado as a strategic site to successfully defend Korea during the Japanese invasion in 1594. To commemorate his victory, the Monument for Admiral Yi Sun-shin (Local Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 39) was erected in Gohado.
Among the attractions in this island, Gohado Yongmeori, or “dragon’s head," is a beautiful coastal deck which serves as the gateway to Mokpo Port, Nakjodae Terrace of Yudalsan Mountain, or Ildeungbawi Rock which present beautiful scenery. Enjoy the brilliant nightscape created by the multi-color lights designed to be in harmony with the sea at night.

Originally named Godo, Geomundo was renamed upon the suggestion of Admiral Ding Ruchang of the Chinese Qing Dynasty Navy who came to the island to help defend against British occupation (1885-1887) when it was briefly named “Port Hamilton" as an outpost of the British military. Admiral Ding was so shocked that the islanders had such a high level of literacy, he suggested the name Geomun which means “great scholarship" to celebrate the scholarly residents.
Geomundo is the southernmost island of the Dadohae National Park and rests halfway between Yeosu city and Jeju Island. The island is covered with Camellia trees, the official flower of Jeonnam. Geomundo is actually a cluster of 3 islands which include the eastern Dongdo Island, western Seodo Island, and central Godo Island. The central Godo Island contains a 100-year-old lighthouse and the cemetery of British soldiers which has become a historical tourist attraction.
Due to the unique geography of Geomundo, it is said to be a ‘fortress’ that someone made. Two islands to the side stretch their arms and envelop it all the way as if it would protect the main island against storms. Since the sea is always calm, it was seen as a blessed port which the World imperial powers such as Russia, Britain, the U.S., and Japan always sought to occupy.

The mountain and the sea which seem dark blue although they are truly green, rocks in various shapes suddenly rising straight out of the sea and the rocks of fantastic shapes created as they endure the waves at a corner of the land for a long time remind one of a scroll of an oriental painting being harmonized with the ocean.

Bogildo Island is 12km from Wando International Harbor. Long times ago, Gosan Yun Seondo dropped by this island to avoid typhoon on the way to Jejudo Island and was fascinated by magnificent landscape of the island. Then, he named the island ‘Buyongdong’ and decided to stay here. As staying for about 10 years, he built 25 buildings including Seyeonjeong Pavilion and Nakseojae Library and enjoyed the pastoral life. His famous work “Angler’s Calendar" was created here. Three beaches on the island with silver sand or pebbles spreading out are very popular as a summer resort. In the southern part of the island, small gravels without sand spread 1.4Km at Yeosongri Beach. It looks more beautiful as being harmonized with the Yeosong-ri evergreen forest, the Natural Monument No. 40. The exuberant subtropical plants create the mysterious harmony with the clear sea. In particular, the southern sea route to Bogildo Island enhances its beauty with the large and small islands scattering here and there over the blue sea.
